Western Maryland is an ideal place to be if you enjoy getting out and riding your bicycle. We are
fortunate to be right in the center of trails such as the Allegheny Highlands Trail, the C&O Canal as
well as the trails at Rocky Gap and Green Ridge State Forest.
The C&O Canal has been a popular destination for local cyclist for a number of years now and its popularity has been growing exponentially in the last two or three years. The trail is mostly flat with many historical points of interest found within 10 miles of Cumberland. The Internet has many sites devoted to the canal but nothing beats getting out and enjoying it in person. When complete, the Allegheny Highlands Trail will connect Pittsburgh, Pa. to Cumberland, Md. With Cumberland being connected to Washington, D.C. via the C&O Canal, we have the good fortune of being right in the center of the best cycling in the Mid-Atlantic States. The Allegheny Highlands Trail is the nicest trail that I've been on when it comes to recreational riding. We all know that it's up hill to Frostburg but the grade is so slight you hardly notice that your climbing. The trail itself is extremely well prepared and the scenic views and tunnels that you pass on your way to the Mason Dixon Line are spectacular. I recently entered my first real event near Blackwater Falls State Park in Davis Wv. and had a blast. The people that I met were concerned about the environment yet still loved having a good time outdoors. I even met a guy named Gunner Shogren, who is a nationally known racer, although I didn't know that at the time. The big thing that I learned however, is that I needed a much more rugged environment to train in. This lead me to thinking of Wills Mountain and what a beautiful location it would be for a 5 to 8 mile circuit. If you would be interested in riding competitively, I have a page dedicated to building a trail on Wills and could use all the help I can get. With alot of hard work and a little luck perhaps we could even have an event sanctioned by the WVMBA. So, if you are interested in helping to form the WMMBA or have any other input regarding this idea please Contact me. |
